Risk Assessment

Leisuresec plc Violence Risk Assessment Process.

Leisuresec plc has reviewed the risks of violence inherent in the role of a door supervisor and has established core control measures including guidance, equipment and training to help reduce risks to staff and customers. In addition to the generic role based risk assessment it is important that we assess and respond to local/venue specific risks using the Venue Violence Risk Assessment. This management document guides Leisuresec Area Managers and Venue Supervisors (risk assessors) through the process of identifying and controlling venue specific risks.

Each venue faces different challenges related to factors such as design and security and also to its location. This assessment tool will help identify and assess such factors and require controls to be put in place. There will also be risks related to the type of event run at a venue, for example, a promoted student event on a Tuesday presents different challenges to a hard core bass line event on a Saturday. It is for this reason that an additional Special Events Violence Risk Assessment should also be completed.

Increasingly door supervisors are required to account for their actions and a consistent approach can only come from the recording and management of such risks. The risk assessment tool provides assessors with guidance and encourages thinking and further consideration of the risks staff face at different venues with different promoters providing the vast range of music genres and sub-culture events ever more on offer.

The tool is designed to encourage the risk assessor to identify the frequency of specific risk outcomes against a range of standard duties performed. These duties are not exhaustive and risk assessors can add accordingly, the standard list includes:

  • Managing front of house
  • Managing reception area
  • Managing the dance floor
  • Managing bar areas
  • Searching customers
  • Searching toilets
  • Ejecting customers from venue

Risk assessors could add for example such duties as;

  • Managing chill out areas
  • Managing DJ or Artiste and their entourage
  • Or managing the beer garden

Across these duties are a list of outcomes from their execution in the face of aggressive behaviour from customers, risk assessors will score the frequency of, or likelihood of, these outcomes from the list provided, this will identify the high risk areas on individual locations and help SSG identify trends across the business.

The identification of such risk allows more effective control mechanisms to manage the risk and helps maintain a safe working environment for door supervisors and a safe and secure venue, in which customers can relax, enjoy and return.
